Day 1 of the RS Aero UK National Championship & International Open

The RS Aero UK National Championship & International Open kicked off amidst excitement at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA). Over a hundred competitors united for an exhilarating start to the event, showcasing both skill and camaraderie.

Taking place from August 28 to August 31, 2025, the championship has attracted participants from various regions. Remarkably, this year’s event features an impressive collection of seven RS Aeros representing the Isle of Man, along with international attendees from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Australia.

Racing Conditions

Portland Harbour set the stage for high-energy racing, with winds averaging 25 knots and gusts exceeding 30 knots. The weather offered the perfect backdrop for competitive sailing, allowing two successful races before the day had to be cut short due to strong gusts reaching 36 knots. As gusts buffeted the race committee’s boat, it was time to wrap up for the day.

Class Competitions

Among the different categories, the RS Aero 5 class stood out, drawing a line-up of 54 competitors. Notably, this class has achieved gender parity, with an equal number of male and female participants. The reigning champion, Andrew Frost from Sutton Bingham, is tied with Joe Jones from Burghfield at the top, both having scored a 1 and 2 in their races. Right behind them, Teddy Dunn from the Isle of Man and Tom Wharmby from Lym Town also remain neck-and-neck, both registering scores of 3 and 4.

In the RS Aero 6 category, a fierce competition emerged as Jack Miller from Felpham, Jon Emmett from Castle Cove, and Joe Scurrah from Notts County all ended up with identical scores, creating an exciting tie for the lead.

Meanwhile, the RS Aero 7 class utilized the brisk conditions perfectly, with Tim Hire from RLym/Lym Town leading with two victories against strong competition from Peter Barton and Noah Rees. The excitement continued in the RS Aero 9 class, which boasted thrilling racing that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Here, Ben Flower from Paignton narrowly leads Rory Cohen from South Cerney by a mere two points.

With four races planned for Day 2, participants are eagerly awaiting another great day on the water, buoyed by a favorable weather forecast. After racing, participants and spectators can look forward to the Daily Awards and sharing top-notch sailing tips, followed by the UK class’s annual AGM. The day will conclude with participants gathering for food at Mia’s Lounge, where every seat is reserved for the RS Aero Class—a perfect opportunity for networking and celebration!
