A Weekend of Thrilling Competition and Bluebird Conditions

The 26th Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta brought enthusiasts together from August 9-10 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, showcasing both competition and camaraderie. Following the Vineyard Cup, the races set the stage for an exhilarating stretch of regattas in the region.

Perfect Weather for Racing

Saturday’s sailing featured a challenging 13-mile course with a steady wind range of eight to twelve knots, making for ideal racing conditions. The following day, competitors faced a lighter breeze on a shorter course, adding a new layer of strategy to the event.

CYOA Chair and organizer Timmy Dittrich described the regatta experience: “The sailing was spectacular, and the dinner was beyond festive. It was a terrific weekend filled with fierce competition where positions were continuously exchanged.”

Diving into the Divisions

The regatta showcased a diverse range of participants, particularly highlighting the growth of the Modern Classic Division, which emerged as the largest segment this year. Jud Smith’s 44 ft. 1984 Buce Farr AFRICA B-Squad claimed victory in this division, closely followed by Lawrence Garrett’s 42 ft. 1973 Camper & Nicholson Border Ally, and Jason Panos’ 38 ft. 1965 William Tripp Jr. Cynara.

Vintage Division Thrills

Excitement in the Vintage Division reached a crescendo as three boats ended up in a tie, resolved according to the Racing Rules of Sailing. The classic 1938 Sparkman & Stephens Black Watch emerged victorious, with the elegant 1934 John G. Alden schooner SPIRIT by Lars and Peter Forsberg coming in close behind.

“This weekend’s forecast offered a fun yet challenging experience,” stated Peter Forsberg. “Saturday’s reach was fantastic for our schooner SPIRIT, and Black Watch displayed its impressive versatility on Sunday.”

Upcoming Events in Nantucket

The excitement continues as the CYCS fleet heads to Nantucket for two more events: the Nantucket Regatta and the Opera House Cup. These regattas promise a mix of thrilling classic sailing and can’t-miss social gatherings. The Opera House Cup weekend kicks off with a Classic Yacht Exhibition along the beautiful Nantucket Boat Basin docks, allowing the public to engage with some of the most famous and prominent yachts of the past 125 years.

Highlights of the Exhibition

  • The exhibition will showcase approximately 15 distinguished designers from yachting history.
  • Visitors can stroll the docks, board the magnificent vessels, and converse with their owners, learning about each boat’s unique history.
  • The Coastal event coincides with regattas in Narragansett Bay and Long Island Sound as the regatta season progresses towards summer’s end.

Understanding the Standings

The boats qualify for the series by actively participating in five races across three events, enabling them to accumulate scores based on a maximum of 500 points. Each vessel’s corrected time is calculated relative to its division, creating a balanced competition.
